On choosing leaders: The Executive Director, Tea Board, R.Ambalavanan, addressing a National Voters Day meeting in Udhagamandalam on Tuesday. -
Udhagamandalam: The need for a mindset change among voters was emphasised by the Executive Director, Tea Board, R.Ambalavanan while participating in a seminar jointly organized by the Gudalur Consumer, Human Resource and Environment Protection Society, the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam and the Makkal Mayyam in connection with the observance of National Voters Day here on Tuesday.
Pointing out that the people now cast their votes on the basis of the size of the party and the resourcefulness and popularity of the candidate, he opined that henceforth they should identify eligible candidates who are educated, capable and straightforward. Lamenting that the trend of offering money for votes is on the rise, he said that the people should put an end to it. On account of it, people with values who are genuinely concerned about the welfare of the society are unable to contest. No other country in the World can boast of a democracy which is as strong as India's, but regrettably, we were “misusing” it, he said. The laws and rules are being thrown by the wayside and shortcuts are being used. It is paving the way for several wrongdoings.
Underscoring the need to shun politics for money and other gains vis-à-vis caste and religion, Mr.Ambalavanan said that people should prepare themselves to oppose them. Lamenting that the people were reluctant to visit the polling stations, he exhorted them to exercise their franchise. It would help prevent bogus votes. Stating that when the country is developing corruption also would increase, he said that if the people are honest corruption can be eradicated.

The Tahsildar, Coonoor, Jaffer Ali, said that all those above 18 years should enrol themselves as voters. It will identify them as citizens of India.
The Secretary, Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam, G.Janardhanan, said that if the people fail to exercise their voting rights persons with dubious track records will occupy positions of power.

The Managing Trustee, Nilgiris Environment and Social Trust V.Sivadass and

the President, Gudalur Consumer, Human Resource and Environment Protection Society S.Sivasubramaniam also spoke. The Principal, Oxford Teacher Training Institute, J.Ramachandran, presided.
